Google's grip on the UK search market has tightened even further with the news that Chrome is now the country's second most popular web browser.

Just three years since its launch, the programme has leapfrogged Mozilla's Firefox browser into second place - and is quickly making gains on market-leader Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Google says its increase in popularity is mostly down to the speed with which it delivers search results, the way it handles security, and a recent national advertising campaign.

Engineer Lars Bak told the Guardian: 'Speed is a fundamental part of it, but it's also about the minimal design and the way it handles security.

'If you as a user try (to load) a webpage and it feels snappy, it's really hard to go back (to another browser). It has shown that people spend more time interacting with the web.'

 

Web metrics firm Statcounter revealed that last month Chrome captured 22 per cent of UK users, slightly more than Firefox.

Internet Explorer was used by 45 per cent, while Apple's Safari was number four in the table, with a nine per cent share.

Globally, Chrome is the third most popular browser, with a 20.65 per cent market share.

But it is soon expected to overtake Firefox, and then become a serious competitor to Internet Explorer, which, despite a 43 per cent share, has been hit by security problems in recent months.

While its rise in popularity has been hailed by Google's bosses, the firm is keen to continue the upward trend.

Last month it revealed it would be launching a Chromebook laptop which would be based on its browser.

It will be made by Samsung and Acer but have no real memory storage space.

Instead, most of the data will be stored online in the 'cloud', a remote server that acts as a hard drive and is accessible from any computer.

Sperm whales are emperors of the ocean.

They're the loudest animals on earth, and possess the biggest brains of any creature that ever lived. But they are also the greatest living predator, armed with the largest teeth known to nature.

And I've just spent two weeks diving with them, in the waters off the Azores.

You might think that's a terrifying prospect. But, in reality, these giants - males can reach 65ft in length, real-life Moby Dicks - are entirely placid animals, far from the mythical monster that sank Captain Ahab's ship.

Extraordinary images revealed a large adult female - about 30ft long - with a juvenile, and three calves. Yet only one of these young could be her own; whales do not give birth to twins or triplets. What we were witnessing was babysitting - on a grand scale.

 

The Azores are volcanic islands in the mid-Atlantic. Their steeply shelving shores mean they're one of the best places in the world to go whale-watching.

Here, resident populations of female sperm whales gather with their young. Many of the calves are still suckling  their mother's milk - extremely rich and 60 per cent fat. (According to one intrepid naturalist I know, it tastes of fishy  cottage cheese.) 

Adult sperm whales feed almost exclusively on squid, which is why they favour these deep waters.

But while they dive for food, using their incredibly loud sonar clicks to scan the ocean, their young calves must stay at the surface, unable to follow their parents.

This presents a big childcare issue. The solution? A babysitter.

Almost uniquely in the animal kingdom, female whales beyond breeding age have an active role, one shared only by elephants and primates.

They may be aunts or grandmothers (and can reach 100 years old or more) or they may not even be genetically related to their charges at all.  

Nevertheless, they patiently take care of the young whales at the surface, waiting for  the feeding mothers to return. I've seen many things in the whales' world, but this amazed me: true whale altruism in action.  

Under special licence from the Azorean government, observing its strict guidelines regarding the whales' welfare, photographer Andrew Sutton and I prepared to dive in the waters off the island of Pico.  

I last met the Azores' whales four years ago, a memorable encounter which became the climax of my book Leviathan and BBC film Arena: The Hunt For Moby Dick. Now, I was eager to renew our acquaintance.

Bouncing in a fast rib — rigid inflatable boat — skippered by the young Azorean captain, João Quaresma, we zoomed out of Lajes harbour and into the open Atlantic.  

A few miles out to sea, we stopped. João had seen the distinctive blow of at least one whale at the surface. I yanked on my wet suit, fins and mask. On João's command, Andrew and I slipped into the water.  

Plunging into a fathomless sea is still pretty scary, even though I've done it many times now. Although the water looked calm and blue from above, below the visibility was drastically reduced.

It never ceases to amaze me that you can be 20ft from a whale and not actually see it. As my heart began to beat faster with anticipation, suddenly they appeared, literally out of the blue.  

Not just one or two, but a group of five animals. My fear fell away, to be replaced by a big grin. I was back with the whales. It was like meeting old friends.

It is an extraordinary sensation to share the water with such gigantic animals. You can almost feel their presence and sense their intelligence. They are truly beautiful, mysterious mammals.  

One of the tantalising aspects of watching whales from the surface is how little you see of them. But underwater, every exquisite detail is revealed.

Each animal is a different shade — grey, brown, even a faint tint of lavender, as the sunlight plays on their bodies through the water. Their mouths glisten pearly white, with the same paleness that flecks their bellies.

I watched as the calves twisted and turned around the adult female, constantly brushing and rolling against her great grey flanks for reassurance.  

They may be loud when hunting but, at the surface, sperm whales are eerily silent. That just made the experience more dream-like.

It was an emotional moment for me, to see these huge creatures physically express their solidarity and dependence on one another.

I was so close, so caught up with the group, that later a friend joked that maybe they wanted to adopt me.

Again and again we entered their domain. One inquisitive calf came up close, peering at me.

Very young, it was plump and unwrinkled (as they age, the whales' bodies start to look a little like prunes, as they've spent too long in the water).

It was clearly curious about this odd, neoprene-clad visitor. Then it dived, leaving behind a cloud of whale poo which I was able to dodge, just in time.

There's so much we still don't understand about these awe-inspiring creatures. Their deep-diving habits — natural submarines, they can plunge more than a mile and stay down for up to two hours - have made them difficult to study.

But now, new technology such as electronic tagging is beginning to reveal amazing facts about sperm whales.

Dr Hal Whitehead, of Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, has spent a lifetime studying sperm whales, with astounding conclusions. Their society is predominantly matriarchal. They even have a sense of culture, passing information from one generation to the next.

Although we do not know what they use their massive brains for, sperm whales certainly communicate in a series of clicks, not unlike Morse code. Dr Whitehead has discovered that separate 'clans' have click 'dialects', as different as a Yorkshire accent is from a Devon one.

For sperm whales, roaming the open ocean, such social bonds are all important. Living in three dimensions, their extended families are also their homes - the way they identify themselves.

In the Azores, I saw whale society at work. One afternoon, I watched underwater as a calf suckled at its mother's belly.

As João, our captain, told me, calves generally start to feed themselves at three or four years. 'But they've found juveniles aged nine years old with milk in their stomachs.'  

Teenage males will move off and form 'bachelor schools', travelling to higher latitudes and becoming increasingly solitary. But they still return to the 'nursery schools' of warmer waters, where they're greeted with what we would call affection, touching their heads and bodies together.

Mature males have even been seen holding young calves gently in their huge, tooth-studded jaws.

On our last day in the Azores, we watched just such a group at the surface. In a flurry of intertwined heads and tails, we saw them opening their mouths, curling their bodies around one another.

It was a bit like watching puppies at play. Clearly, they were having fun. I felt envious of their freedom.

Then, as we were about to leave, two whales headed for our boat. I was sure they would veer off once they came within a certain distance.

To my amazement, they just kept on coming. I realised, as one great head lifted out of the water, that this was a mother-and-calf pair. I stood up excitedly on the prow, nearly overbalancing in the process.

They passed right alongside, so near I could have reached down and touched them. I could see the female on her side, with her calf beside her. I was stunned.

We'd spent two weeks watching whales — now the whales had come to watch us.  

With such huge animals so close, we might have feared for our safety. Yet there was nothing but calm in this last encounter with these gentle, curious creatures. It was incredibly touching.

As I looked down, I could see the mother and calf looking back at me.

Perhaps they'd come to say goodbye. I'd rather it was: 'See you later.'

When Tanya Vlach lost her left eye in a horrific 2005 car accident she was devastated.

As a popular visual artist in San Francisco, how could she carry on with her work? It would surely have an impact.

But after a bout of depression, Ms Vlach realised there could be endless artistic opportunities in a prosthetic eye that housed a tiny video camera.

That idea is, of course, nothing new. Look at the Six Million Dollar Man, the 1970s TV series that created a bionic humanoid.

Arnie in the Terminator films is another example.

But Ms Vlach's planned intra-ocular camera is souped up for 2011.

Her dream is to make it web optimised, perhaps with its own app, so movement could be controlled externally.

She'd like sensors that respond to blinking, enabling the camera to take still photographs, zoom, focus and turn on and off.

The pupil would be sensitive to light change, dilating as a human eye would.

Such a wish list doesn't come cheap. But Ms Vlach has already smashed her goal of raising $15,000 by early August, such is the interest from the science community, those other 'one eyeds' as she calls them, and beyond.

'While my prosthesis is an excellent aesthetic replacement, I am interested in capitalising on the current advancement of technology to enhance the abilities of my prosthesis for an augmented reality,' Ms Vlach writes on her website.

I discovered in a very traumatic and jarring way that you can lose life quickly and without warning- everything that you knew, your memories, your friends and family gone in an instant.

'This decision to implant a camera in my eye is like inviting a little cinematographer to live in my brain. This consciousness that I'm documenting what I'm observing enables me to be more present and engaged in every moment.'

Ms Vlach has plans for a graphic novel, an experimental documentary, a web series, a game, and a live performance all using the prosthetic.

But such a device could open up a world of opportunity elsewhere from the military through to personal shoppers, turning a disability into something positive.

The next generation of military robots is set to be based on designs inspired by the insect world.

The dragonfly drones and cyborg moths, with in-built micro-cameras, could revolutionise spying missions and rescue operations.

The advantage of using drones is that they can be used in emergency situations too dangerous for people and in secret military surveillance raids.

And new research suggests that the mechanics of insects can be reverse-engineered to design midget machines to scout battlefields and search for victims trapped in rubble.

Scientists have taken their inspiration from animals which have evolved over millennia to the perfect conditions for flight.

 

Zoologist Richard Bomphrey, of Oxford University, is leading a study to generate new insight into how insect wings have evolved over the last 350 million years.

He said: 'Nature has solved the problem of how to design miniature flying machines.

'By learning those lessons, our findings will make it possible to aerodynamically engineer a new breed of surveillance vehicles that, because they are as small as insects and also fly like them, completely blend into their surroundings.'

The insect manoeuvrability which allows flies the ability to land precisely and fly off again at speed may one day save lives in wars and disasters.

The military would like to develop tiny robots that can fly inside caves and barricaded rooms to send back real-time intelligence about the people and weapons inside.

Dr Bomphrey said: 'Scary spider robots were featured in Michael Crichton's 1980s film Runaway - but our robots will be much more scaled down and look more like the quidditch ball in the Harry Potter films, because of its ability to hover and flutter.

'The problem for scientists at the moment is that aircrafts can't hover and helicopters can't go fast. And it is impossible to make them very small.

'With insects you get a combination of both these assets in miniature. And when you consider we have been flying for just over a hundred years as opposed to 350 million years, I would say it is they who have got it right, and not us!'

Currently, the smallest of state-of-the-art fixed-wing unmanned surveillance vehicles are around a foot wide. The incorporation of flapping wings is the secret to making the new designs so small.

To achieve flight, any object requires a combination of thrust and lift. In manmade aircraft, two separate devices - engines and wings - are needed to generate these, but this limits the scope for miniaturising flying machines.

An insect's flapping wings combine both thrust and lift. If manmade vehicles could emulate this more efficient approach, it would be possible to scale down flying machines to much smaller dimensions than is currently possible.

Dr Bomphrey said: 'This will require a much more detailed understanding than we currently have of how insect wings have evolved, and specifically of how different types of insect wing have evolved for different purposes.'

The team's groundbreaking work has attracted the attention of NATO, the US Air Force and the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development.

The research is expected to produce findings that can be used by the defence industry within three to five years, leading to the development and widespread deployment of insect-sized flying machines in the next two decades.

Dr Bomphrey said: 'This is just one more example of how we can learn important lessons from nature. Tiny flying machines could provide the perfect way of exploring all kinds of dark, dangerous and dirty places.'

You can't help but feel sorry for any farmer in Wiltshire whose wheat field is next to an ancient white horse or stone circle. From April until August, these fields are prime targets for crop-circle makers — or, if you prefer, aliens. 

A couple of weeks ago, a new circle cropped up next to Stonehenge, with another sprouting earlier this month beneath the white horse on Milk Hill, near Alton Barnes. 

And, every time, it's the poor farmer who bears the cost. Tim Carson, from Alton Barnes, has had 125 circles on his land since 1990. The price in ruined crops is particularly steep this year because of soaring fuel and fertiliser costs, and a 25 per cent drop in wheat yields due to the drought.

'I'm beginning to get a bit tired of it all,' says Mr Carson. 'Each circle costs me £1,000 in lost income. This year, I decided to destroy circles as soon as I found them, but that means losing more crops. And, whatever you do, the circles affect the growing next year, as the thick mat of crops covers soil, compromising its quality.'

Every year, 50 to 60 circles materialise in the rolling chalk downlands of Wiltshire. In the rest of the world put together, only 40 to 50 appear annually. 

And, in recent years, a booming tourist trade has developed. From Belgium, Holland, America, Norway and Australia, crop-circle enthusiasts come in their thousands — each with their own theory, each rushing to a new site as soon as it is reported.

This week, within hours of the first reports of a new circle on Windmill Hill — near the neolithic stone circle at Avebury — a Dutch tour party of nine people rushed to the spot.

'There are heaps of biophysical anomalies here,' said the tour leader, Janet Ossebaard, 45, author of Crop Circles: Scientific Evidence. 'This wasn't made by people, otherwise you'd see damage from board marks [where hoaxers lay planks to flatten the wheat]. It's been hit by a plasma vortex.

'You can see the burn marks on the crops and cavities,' she says, holding up a grain stalk, which does indeed have small holes in it. 'We also found a half-fried caterpillar. This is a vortex that has been intelligently guided — not by hoaxers, nor the Army [which is heavily represented in this part of Wiltshire].'

Janet comes over from Holland twice a year for nine days, bringing two parties  of 15 people apiece. This morning, the remainder of her party were in microlight planes, looking for crop circles from the air; one of them spotted this particular one.

The circle consisted of two vast spirals, around 40 yards in diameter, connected so that it looked like a pair of wacky, swirly-eyed spectacles.
In the field, you can barely make out the circle until you're very close.

Then, you see a curving path of flattened wheat, spiralling in ever-decreasing circles, until you reach a clearing in the middle — with a sheaf of untouched wheat in each spectacle lens.

Also surveying the scene, dressed in a kilt and bearing a staff, is Dr Ian Baillie, 57, a retired physics teacher from Folkestone. 

'I've been studying circles since the late Eighties, and making annual visits since 1994,' he says. 'The patterns are all mathematical. There's sacred geometry there. There's ancient history and classical mythology, too — and intelligently-guided energy.

'Just look at the bloom on the wheat,' he says, pointing to the thin sheen of dust on the wheat stalks. 'That would be wiped off if someone was flattening it, but you can still see it.'

Whoever's responsible — aliens, hoaxers or some other intelligently-guided force — they've certainly been much busier over the past 20 years.
Crop circles have been reported in England since 1678, when a Hertfordshire news pamphlet referred to The Mowing Devil, a creature that cut a farmer's oat crop into a series of concentric circles. In the 19th century, occasional circles were recorded and the first-known photograph of one appeared in Sussex in 1932. 

But it wasn't until the early Nineties that Wiltshire crop circles started multiplying at an extreme rate.

In 1990, Led Zeppelin released an album, Remasters, with a picture on the cover of an elaborate crop circle created on Tim Carson's land. Then, in 1991, two hoaxers, Dave Chorley and Doug Bower, confessed that they had been faking circles for 13 years. 

Working at night in groups of six, with a skilled craftsman directing, teams can produce elaborate patterns in just a few hours using simple tools: string, tape measures, bamboo sticks for marking and 3ft-wide wooden planks to flatten the crop. In badly-done circles, you can see the marks from the planks.

In the early Nineties, a group of professional crop-circle producers emerged, making designs for promotional use. In 1998, Mitsubishi commissioned a design in the shape of their Space Star car. Shredded Wheat also paid for its logo to be cut into a wheat field.

Thanks to hoaxers — and, if you're a believer, intelligently-guided forces — the circles have become a familiar feature of the Wiltshire landscape.
They do appear elsewhere — Lincolnshire had a new one this month and there have been others in the Midlands, Kent, Essex, Dorset and Hampshire — but Wiltshire is home to three-quarters of all British circles. 

The season begins in April with the first yellow flowering of rapeseed and continues through the summer as barley, wheat and linseed crops mature. The season ends in August with the wheat harvest.

Over the course of the season, thousands of enthusiasts make their way to the Silent Circle information centre in a handsome old school-house in Yatesbury, Wiltshire.

'I divide the circles into three groups,' says Charles Mallett, 41, from Avebury, a researcher of anomalous phenomena who founded Silent Circle in 2002. 'First, there are the idiot hoaxers out for an ego kick. You can spot the systematic way they've laid the strips, and the wheat is smeared with mud. To me, this is just vandalism.

'Then you get serious people who produce incredible designs in covert circumstances. They are making mysterious art. They're not doing it for a joke or an ego trip.

'And then you get circles that can't be explained by human intervention and deserve investigation. I've seen crops, such as rapeseed and linseed, that are almost impossible to flatten without snapping, which have been bent back with no damage, and crops that have been laid in one single big sweep — not in strips. I've tried to replicate the effect, and I can't.'

Whoever makes the circles, the farmers always suffer, although some put an honesty box near the circle so sightseers can donate money. 

However, Tim Carson says they are often stolen. 'You've got to check on them three times a day. Last year, some bright spark had the idea of installing his own honesty box in my field!'

In 2001, perhaps the most elaborate-ever pattern — 409 circles, connected in a six-sided triskelion (a shape consisting of six interlocked spirals) at Milk Hill — brought the farmer thousands of pounds in media fees and helicopter landing charges.

This month, there's another new circle at Milk Hill, just below the 200-year-old white chalk horse. It was cut on two separate nights. 

'They did the outline first,' says Charles Mallett. 'And came back to fill in the middle — which makes you think it was humans.'

Meanwhile, the gawpers have arrived. Twenty cars are parked in the field. The tourists do their best not to trample the crops, making their way via tramlines used by irrigation machines. But some damage is unavoidable. In the middle of the circle lie a couple in a Druid-style embrace. Nearby, a woman is on her knees, staring into the middle distance.

Mirjam Masen, 42, an artist from Ostend, Belgium, is in England for a month studying the circles. 

She says: 'All round here, there's bad energy,' explaining this is caused by the Army using the area for exercises. 'The circles bring positive energy to balance the negativity.

'The crop circles are messages from a world teacher, suggesting we should put harmony before violence.'

Shelley Lemaire, 39, a child worker from Auckland, New Zealand, says: 'You can feel the energy. There's a higher frequency, a star frequency coming from other realms.'

Even if the farmers don't benefit from these enthusiasts, the Wiltshire tourist industry — worth an annual £850 million — certainly does. 

Crop-circle coach parties stay in the nearby market town of Devizes for as much as a week at a time. Local tours ferry tourists around 'Avebury's Fields of Dreams' for £50 a day.

Just a five-minute journey from the latest crop circle, and much favoured by enthusiasts, is the Barge Inn at Honeystreet, a Georgian pub on the Kennet and Avon canal. Among the beers on tap is locally-made Croppie, with a picture on the pump of intersecting circles and loops. 

Sitting in the pub garden is Jean Anderson from Queensland, Australia. She says: 'I've been interested in crop circles for years and was gobsmacked when I saw them for myself. Does it really matter if they are man-made? They're beautiful.'

But beauty doesn't compensate the farmers. As Tim Carson says: 'If someone offered £5,000 to do a circle, that would be a different matter.'
Until then, I'm on the side of the farmers, rather than the artists — or the aliens.
